The system consists of an ozone generator with a small submersible pump that sits inside the tank and mixes millions of ozone saturated bubbles through the water. It uses a media filter for removal of oxidised iron, leaving the water crystal-clear. Iron staining is a very common complaint from many bores in many areas. Iron becomes a problem when it oxidises into iron oxide (ie. rust!), ie. the water normally comes out of the ground fairly clear, and later it either changes colour or it forms little orange/red “fuzzy” bits that generally sink to the bottom. Either way, this can cause unsightly staining of both porous and fairly impervious materials. It can also cause blockages of drippers and sprinkler outlets. When dealing with very porous materials (stonework, porous concrete, timber fences), inside-the-house applications, and for filling swimming pools, it becomes necessary to actually remove the iron from the water.The ozone generator creates ozone the same way the sun does in our upper atmosphere. Inside the generator is a very high intensity ultraviolet (UV) lamp that simulates the ozone producing UV rays of our sun. When air is drawn through and circulates through the UV chamber, the result is conversion of the oxygen in the air to ozone.The output of the ozone generator (ozone saturated bubbles) is fed through a tube into the tank through a venturi, and mixed with the water through a 5,000L/hr submersible pump. These bubbles mix with the water in the tank, allowing the ozone to do its job. Soluble iron is oxidised, and forms iron oxide which is readily filtered-out. Iron bacteria is destroyed. Manganese is oxidised into manganese oxide. Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg gas) is converted to hydrogen and sulfate, which is harmless. Bacteria, fungi, viruses and algae are destroyed. The oxidised iron (iron oxide) and manganese (manganese oxide) is filtered through a large media filter containing activated zeolite. It is removed from the filter later by a simple back-washing process (normally after every 2-3 tankfuls).
